Lacaton & Vassal Architectes is a Paris-based practice founded in 1987 by Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal that works on a range of international projects from public buildings, housing and urban planning. The firm's works are known for its principle to generate modest but creative solutions based on limited resources and an economy of means, while seeking to accommodate generous spaces, living quality, comfort and beauty. Inspired by simple structures Vassal experienced in Africa after their graduation from the School of Architecture of Bordeaux in 1980, Lacaton & Vassal's social architecture often embraces overlooked utilities and charm of abandoned spaces with imagination out of specific situations and attention to its inhabitants and uses. Their major projects include the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (FRAC) in Dunkerque, France, the renovation of Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Nantes School of Architecture, and transformations of a number of public housing projects in France. The office has received many awards, for example the Rolf Schock Prize, Stockholm 2014, and Grand Prix National d’Architecture, France, 2008. Ann Lacaton has been a visiting professor and critic at several institutions including the University of Madrid and Harvard GSD. Jean Philippe Vassal has been a professor at the UDK in Berlin since 2012, and a visiting professor at TU Berlin, EPFL Lausanne and many more.
