Pei Zhu is a leading Chinese architect whose Beijing-based practice Studio Pei-Zhu seeks to explore designs formed by its context, in particular in urban China. Its projects reflect an innovative conceptual thinking and a critical outlook through design methods and practical solutions, while reinterpreting the local philosophy and vernacular elements in contemporary urban environments. The clean yet powerful form is often inspired by nature, as the architecture revives the soul of old districts and reenergizes urban activities in public space. The studio’s work embraces not only cultural projects such as museums, public buildings, culture centers and theaters, but also commercial and residential projects throughout China and abroad. Studio Pei-Zhu’s built works and on-going project include Cai Guo-Qiang Courtyard House Renovation in Beijing (2007), “Digital Beijing” Olympics Control Center in Beijing (2008), Venice Biennale Chinese Pavilion (2010), OCT Design Museum (2011), Minsheng Contemporary Art Museum in Beijing, Tai Miao Art Museum in Beijing, Art Museum of Wuhan University, and the Performance Art Center in Dali. Pei Zhu was also commissioned to design Guggenheim Art Pavilion in Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Museum in Beijing. Pei Zhu received his Master degree in Architecture both from Tsinghua University and UC Berkeley, before establishing Studio Pei-Zhu in 2005. Named one of “the 5 greatest architects under 50” by the Huffington Post in 2011, Pei Zhu has received numerous recognitions, including the Courvoisier Design Award by Wallpaper in 2009, the Design Vanguard Award by Architecture Record in 2007, the China Award from Architectural Record in 2005 and DFA Grand Award and Special Award for Culture, Hong Kong, in 2008, and Special Merit Award by UIA and UNESCO in 1989.
