Laurence Loh advocates Designing with Culture to create sustainable urban solutions.
His architectural practice, Arkitek LLA, delivers highly commended projects related to new-built designs and conservation, which include the restoration of the world-renown Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards, Most Excellent Project) and the restoration of Malaysia’s Stadium of Independence (2008 UNESCO Award of Excellence). In 2018, the adaptive reuse of the UAB Building in Penang won the Malaysian Institute of Architects’ Award for Building of the Year.
He is a Director of ThinkCity, a community-based organization that engages with government agencies, business communities and civil society to undertaken urban rejuvenation. Presently, it is developing approaches that promote an economy based on culture and sustainability.
In 2019 the Institute honored Laurence with the PAM Gold Medal Award for his life-long contribution to the advancement of architecture in Malaysia and internationally.
