Urban-Think Tank is an interdisciplinary design practice that integrates research and design on objects, ranging from public buildings, infrastructure, institutions and urbanism. Executed through partnership between professionals, stakeholders and policy makers and favor for locally driven actions, U-TT aims to deliver innovative yet practical applications for sustainable development via design. They acknowledge city dynamicity and emerging urban phenomena, including the births of regional network and informal cities. They believe that improvisation and flexibility of these informal urban nodes make it a key aspect of, not an exception to, the globalized economy. Metropolitan, urban, and architectural interventions perform together to provide appropriate solutions for the city. U-TT is founded by Alfredo Brillembourg in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1993. Hubert Klumpner joined as its co-director in 1998. Since 2007, Brillembourg and Klumpner have taught at Columbia University, where they founded the Sustainable Living Urban Model Laboratory (S.L.U.M. Lab), a teaching design studio that develops urban strategy to tackle problem areas of the city. They hold the chair for Architecture and Urban Design at the Swiss Institute of Technology, ETH in Zürich since July 2010. They have been awarded the 2010 Ralph Erskine Award from the Swedish Association of Architects. Recently, they have been awarded 2012 Global Silver Holcim Award for the Grotão - Escola de Música project in São Paulo, and the Golden Lion for the international competition at the 2012 Venice Biennale of Architecture for their installation, "Torre David/Gran Horizonte".
